What are the rings made of
Saturn's rings consist of billions of pieces of water ice and rock, ranging in size from dust grains to high-rise buildings. They span about 280,000 km but are only about 10 meters thick in many regions — a ratio equivalent to a sheet of paper as wide as a football field.
Data from the Cassini spacecraft suggest that the rings may be quite young, perhaps only 100–400 million years old, and are gradually falling into the planet as "ring rain."
A planet lighter than water
The average density of Saturn is 0.687 g/cm³ — lower than that of water. If there were an ocean large enough, Saturn would float.
Enceladus and Titan
Enceladus is only 500 km wide but spews plumes of water vapor from fissures at its south pole. Cassini flew through these plumes and detected salts, silica, and organic molecules — signs of a liquid water ocean in contact with a rocky seafloor.
Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere, composed mainly of nitrogen. On its surface, there are rivers, lakes, and seas — but they contain liquid methane and ethane at -179°C, not water. NASA's Dragonfly mission is expected to send a rotorcraft there in the 2030s.
The hexagonal north pole
A stable atmospheric jet stream forms a regular hexagon about 30,000 km wide around the north pole. This structure has been observed since the Voyager era and still persists — a phenomenon not seen on any other planet.
