What is Apparent Magnitude?
Magnitude is a scale measuring the brightness of celestial objects in the sky:
- The smaller the number → the brighter the star.
- Negative values → extremely bright.
- A difference of 5 magnitudes corresponds to a 100-fold difference in brightness.
Therefore, the table below reflects how an observer from Earth perceives brightness, rather than the actual energy emitted by the star.

Notable Stars
Sirius
- The brightest star in the night sky.
- Only 8.6 light-years from Earth.
- Actually a binary star system consisting of Sirius A and Sirius B.
Alpha Centauri
- The star system closest to the Sun.
- Contains Proxima Centauri, the star closest to us.
Betelgeuse
- A red supergiant in the constellation Orion.
- Has a radius hundreds of times larger than the Sun.
- Will end its life in a supernova explosion in the future.
Vega
- The brightest star in the constellation Lyra.
- Was the North Star about 12,000 years ago and will return to this position in the future due to Earth's axial precession.
Deneb
- One of the intrinsically brightest stars visible to the naked eye.
- Hundreds of times farther away than Sirius, yet still makes the top 20 due to its immense intrinsic luminosity.

Composed of:
- Vega

- Deneb
This is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the summer sky.
The Winter Hexagon
Composed of:
- Sirius
- Procyon
- Pollux
- Capella
- Aldebaran
- Rigel
Betelgeuse lies near the center of this pattern.
Interesting Facts
⭐ Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, but not the intrinsically brightest.
⭐ Deneb is hundreds of times farther away than Sirius, but is still clearly visible to the naked eye because it is a supergiant with a vastly greater intrinsic luminosity.
⭐ Most of the bright stars visible to the naked eye make up only a tiny fraction of the stellar population in the Milky Way. The vast majority of stars are actually small, dim red dwarfs that are invisible to the naked eye.
