What is a red dwarf?
Red dwarfs are the most common type of star in the Milky Way galaxy, accounting for approximately 70% to 75% of all stars.
Compared to the Sun, they:
- Are much smaller in mass.
- Have lower surface temperatures.
- Are much dimmer.
- Have extremely long lifespans, ranging from hundreds of billions to trillions of years.
Could planets around Proxima Centauri harbor life?
Because red dwarfs emit little energy, the zone where liquid water can exist is located very close to the host star.
This creates two major challenges:
- Planets are prone to being tidally locked, with one side always in daylight and the other always in night.
- Strong energy flares from the star can deplete a planet's atmosphere.
However, Proxima Centauri b is still considered one of the most notable candidates in the search for life outside the Solar System.
How long does it take to reach Proxima Centauri?
The distance to Proxima Centauri is approximately 40 trillion km.
With current technology:
- Voyager 1: about 75,000 years.
- New Horizons: about 90,000 years.
- Parker Solar Probe: about 6,700 years.
Future hope
The Breakthrough Starshot project proposes using nanocrafts propelled by high-power lasers.
If a speed of about 20% of the speed of light is achieved, the travel time to Proxima Centauri could be reduced to only about 20 years.
Proxima Centauri's planetary system
Discovered planets include:
- Proxima Centauri b: a rocky planet located in the habitable zone.
- Proxima Centauri c: a larger planet, still under further study.
- Proxima Centauri d: located very close to the host star and too hot for liquid water.
⭐ If one day humans undertake their first interstellar journey, Proxima Centauri will almost certainly be humanity's first destination beyond the Solar System.
