First 0–15 Seconds: Oxygen Deprivation and Loss of Consciousness
There is no air in space.
- Oxygen in the blood is rapidly consumed.
- The brain quickly suffers from severe oxygen deprivation.
- After about 10–15 seconds, a person will lose consciousness.
If you try to hold your breath, the air in your lungs will expand as external pressure drops abruptly, which can cause lung tissue damage.
The Next Few Tens of Seconds: The Body Begins to Swell
Due to the near-vacuum environment:
- External pressure drops to near zero.
- Fluids in tissues begin to form gas bubbles.
This phenomenon is known as ebullism (boiling caused by a drop in pressure).
The body may:
- Swell noticeably.
- Increase significantly in volume.
However, the body does not explode as depicted in many movies, because human skin is elastic enough to contain the internal tissues.
Fluids Begin to Boil
When pressure drops sharply:
- Saliva bubbles.
- Tears evaporate rapidly.
- Fluids in tissues begin to produce water vapor.
Blood in major vessels does not boil immediately because it remains pressurized by the circulatory system, but the forming gas bubbles cause severe damage to the body.
No Instant Freezing
A common misconception is that a human will instantly freeze solid in space.
In reality:
- A vacuum conducts heat very poorly.
- There is no air to rapidly draw heat away from the body.
Therefore, the body does not freeze right away.
Conversely, if directly exposed to sunlight:
- The sunlit side can reach temperatures above 120°C.
- The side in shadow can drop below −150°C.
Cosmic Radiation
On Earth, we are protected by:
- The atmosphere.
- The ozone layer.
- Earth's magnetic field.
In outer space:
- Ultraviolet radiation strikes the skin directly.
- X-rays, high-energy protons, and cosmic rays can penetrate the body.
With prolonged exposure, cells suffer severe radiation damage.
After 1–2 Minutes: Death
If not returned to a pressurized and oxygenated environment:
- Brain damage becomes irreversible.
- The circulatory system collapses.
- Total oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) occurs.
Death usually occurs within 1–2 minutes.
Can a Person Be Rescued?
Yes.
If the victim is returned to an environment with adequate pressure and oxygen within less than about 1 minute, the chance of recovery exists and may leave no severe lasting damage.
🌌 Space does not kill humans with instant cold as movies often depict. The greatest hazards are vacuum and oxygen deprivation, causing a person to lose consciousness in just a few seconds and die within minutes if not rescued in time.
